By joining the fraternity, the benefits for MIMA members are as follows:
- Access to all MIMA research reports and MIMA activities
- Books, publications, survey reports and other reference materials are available to members seeking to enhance their knowledge or widen their maritime knowledge at the MIMA Resource Centre
- Complimentary copies of MIMA Bulletin
- Advance information on upcoming maritime conferences, workshops, seminars;
- Discounts on fees for MIMA’s Seminars and Conferences;
- Discounts for MIMA publications;
- Attend MIMA Annual General Meeting and voting rights for the selection of Board of Directors;
- Be a stakeholder in a major maritime think-tank;
- Promote networking among maritime government agencies, academia, NGO’s, maritime experts, and other stakeholders; and
- Add voices to the maritime affairs of the country.
- The Institute’s Membership is open to any person, organization or corporate body which has the same objectives and interest in achieving the objectives of MIMA.
- Any person, organization or corporate body desiring to be admitted as a Member shall submit to the Secretary an application form as may be prescribed and approved by the Board from time to time. Where the applicant is a person, the form shall be signed by that person, and where the applicant is an organization or corporate body, the form shall be signed by an authorized officer of the organization or corporate body. The applicant shall pay such amount of entrance fee and annual subscription fee as may be determined by the Board from time to time. In the event where the application is not approved by the Board, the Secretary shall notify the applicant accordingly and the said entrance fee and annual subscription fee shall be returned to the applicant.
- No person, organization or corporate body shall be admitted as a Member unless he is a Malaysian citizen. A non citizen may be admitted as an Associate Member provided he shall have no voting right and shall not be eligible to hold any office.
- The Board shall have full discretion as to the admission of any person, organization or corporate body to membership of the Institute and without being required to assign any reason therefore, refuse to approve any application for admission to membership of the Institute.
- The Secretary shall upon approval of the application enter the name of such applicant in the register of Members of the Institute and upon such entry such applicant shall become a Member accordingly and the Secretary shall thereupon furnish to that Member a copy of the Memorandum and Articles of Association of MIMA.
The Board may for special reasons prescribe different amounts of subscription fee and annual fee to be paid by Members and it shall have power to exempt or waive the entrance fee.
- A Member shall ipso facto cease to be a Member if he:-
- is convicted of any seizable offence and sentenced to a fine of not less than Ringgit Malaysia Two Thousand (RM 2,000) or imprisonment of not less than twelve (12) months;
- is adjudged a bankrupt or shall make any composition or arrangement with his creditors;
- is found or declared to be of unsound mind;
- being engaged in any profession is prohibited by the disciplinary body of that profession from continuing to practice;
- is detained under any Detention Order or is placed under Restricted Residence.

- resigns by notice in writing to the Secretary;
- being an organization or corporate body, is dissolved or wound up or ceases to carry on activity for more than six (6) months.
- Unless otherwise provided any Member who shall fail in the observance of any of the Rules and Regulations may have his Membership terminated by resolution of a majority of the Members of the Board present and voting at an ordinary or a special Board Meeting. Such Member shall have seven (7) clear day’s notice sent to him of the Board Meeting, and he may attend the meeting, but shall not be present at the voting or take part in proceedings otherwise than that allowed by the Board. The Secretary shall, upon the conclusion of the Board Meeting, give a notice of termination to the Member, if resolved to terminate his Membership, or if otherwise, inform the Member accordingly.
- Any Member, other than a Life Member or Honorary Member in arrears of annual subscription for any two (2) consecutive years shall be deemed to have withdrawn from the Institute, but the Board may reinstate such Member upon an application in that behalf made by him.
- A Member whose Membership is terminated may within seven (7) days from the date of the notice of his termination seek for a review of the Board’s decision by an ordinary or special Board Meeting at which not less than two thirds of the Board shall be present. The decision of the Board shall be final.
- Any person, organization or corporate body so ceasing to be a Member may be readmitted to Membership by the Board at its absolute discretion. No person, organization or corporate body who cease to be a Member shall be readmitted within a period of one year from the date of the notice of his termination.
- Any person, organization or corporate body ceasing to be a Member shall forfeit all rights to or claim upon the Institute or its property or funds.
Any Member who desires to cease to be a Member shall signify such desire in writing to the Secretary, and thereupon his name shall be removed from the register of Members and he shall be deemed to have ceased to be a Member with effect from the date of such removal. Before ceasing to be a Member, he shall discharge all is liabilities as a Member, failing which any monies due and owing by that Member shall be a debt due to the Institute.
- Every Member shall be bound to further to the best of his ability the objects and interests of the Institute and shall observe all the Rules and Regulations.
- All Members shall be entitled to reasonable access to the premises of the Institute and to all such information and advice with regard to the objectives of the Institute as the Board deem expedient to supply.
- No rights or privileges of any Member shall be in any way transferable or transmissible, but all such rights and privileges shall cease upon the Member ceasing to be such, whether by death, retirement or otherwise
