Resource Centre

Background

MIMA Resource Centre was established to support MIMA’s aim to be the national resource and reference centre and focal point for all maritime research.

MIMA Resource Centre is a specialised research library dealing with all matters pertaining to the acquisition, storage, management and dissemination of maritime information. As these tasks are the lifeline of its existence, the Resource Centre has to be alert and proactive in pursuing its vision.


Goals & Objectives

In achieving the aspired vision and fulfilment of the mission, the Centre has configured a set of goals and objectives to guide the implementation and execution of its strategic operations,

The Centre will serve MIMA researchers and supporting staff, MIMA Board of Directors and MIMA Members in their needs for maritime information. The Centre will make its resources available to the local and foreign maritime research community, including students of higher learning institutions, public and commercial sector researchers, NGO and interested public.

The Centre will correspond in alliance with MIMA research centres to enhance the quality of services and information provided and available – contributing directly towards achieving an excellence MIMA.

The centre will attempt to accomplish and justify provision 3(f) in MIMA’s Memorandum of Association, which states one of the objects for which the Institute is established.

“to act as a national resource and reference centre for all maritime related fields and to maintained close links with relevant resource centres in the country like the National Library from which the Government agencies and both public and private sectors can tap information on various aspects of national maritime issues through the publication and distribution of the results of research and studies”

In enabling and realising the goals and objectives,

  • MIMA Resource Centre will emphasise on quality data reference support for MIMA research activities
  • MIMA Resource Centre will strengthen its role as a specialised research library and concentrate on becoming friendlier to users in terms of intellectual and physical access to its collection and services
  • MIMA Resource Centre will provide adequate related maritime data and information resources to support MIMA research interest and activities
  • MIMA Resource Centre will improve access to maritime information, information seeking services, and its efficiency through automation and enhance audio-visual capabilities and services

The following rules and regulations have been drawn up to better serve users and to ensure a conducive environment for research in the MIMA Resource Centre (MRC):

  • Users shall maintain perfect order and reasonable silence at all times
  • Noise, disturbances, or inappropriate behaviour is prohibited, including abusive or threatening behaviour to MRC staff and other MRC users
  • No food and drink is permitted in the MRC. However, mineral water/ plain water may be consumed in the MRC
  • Pets are not allowed in the MRC
  • Umbrellas, raincoats, helmets, and hazardous items (chemical and toxic substances, sharp objects, etc.) are prohibited in the MRC
  • Smoking (including the use of electronic and herbal cigarettes) is not permitted in the MRC
  • MRC materials are to be used with extra care and users are not to mutilate, disfigure, deface or otherwise damage MRC property
  • No materials other than official notices from the MRC or MIMA may be distributed or posted within the premises without the permission of the Librarian
  • MRC furniture, fittings, or equipment must not be misused or their arrangement altered.
  • Users will be held responsible for any damage to MRC materials and property including bearing the cost of repairing or replacing them in addition to any penalty that may be imposed by the Librarian
  • The Librarian reserves the right to suspend and/or cancel the membership privileges of any member found misbehaving towards MRC staff or for any other inappropriate behaviour
  • Only staffs and registered members of MIMA are entitled to use the library
  • Visitors or external users who are not members should make prior arrangements with the MRC to use the facilities including submission of an introduction letter from their head of department, librarian, or organisation
  • Any infringement of the rules and regulations will render the member’s privilege of admission to and of borrowing materials from MRC liable to cancellation
  • MRC will not be responsible for any loss, damage, or theft of visitor’s items
  • These rules and regulations of MRC are subject to change from time to time

 

Borrowing, Recall, and Return of Books on Loan

  • A borrower is responsible for all materials borrowed and the return of any materials recorded as borrowed by him or her. Failure to return materials will be subject to a fine or payment for the cost of replacement
  • Loan will be issued during library opening hours
  • Books on loan are for the personal use of the borrower only, and must not be passed on to any person. A borrower may not borrow books in anyone’s name but his/her own.
  • The Librarian reserves the right to add, limit, or deny the loan eligibility to the user
  • The Librarian may recall any book from any member at any time and the member shall return the same immediately
  • The Librarian reserves the right to recall materials borrowed if they are required by another user at any time. A notice will be sent to the users informing him/her of the material to be recalled and the new due date. Failure to return the material by the new due date will result in suspension of loan privileges until all recalled items are returned
  • Do not write, underline, or deface any book. MRC books will be examined on return and the borrower held responsible for any damage
  • A charge will be made for items lost or badly damaged while on loan
  • If the books are lost, the borrower shall replace the books of the same edition or latest edition or pay double the cost of the book after getting permission from the Librarian.
  • The user shall report to the Librarian or MRC staff immediately for the loss of borrowed materials
  • Borrowers should not exceed their loan allowances. Loan periods depend on the category of borrower
  • Loan should be returned by the due date. Items may be renewed if they are not required by another user
  • Loan may be renewed either in person, by e-mail to MRC staff or Librarian or by phone

  • Borrowers are responsible for returning books before or on the due date.
  • Fines will be imposed for overdue items.
  • Overdue charges/fines are charged at RM1.00 per day, per item.
  • Overdue charges can be paid at the Library Circulation Counter.
  • Borrowers may be blocked from borrowing any library materials until the overdue item has been returned.
  • To help users manage their loans and return materials, MRC will send the users a reminder notice shortly before the due date of the loaned material.
