Building on the past, charting on the future “MALAYSIA: A MARITIME NATION”

Kuala Lumpur, 3 September 2021 – “Malaysia: A Maritime Nation”, an anthology of 18 maritime experts published by the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA), launched today by Datuk Isham Ishak, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Transport.

The book is divided into themes sorting from different aspects of the maritime sector including, the factors that make Malaysia a “maritime nation” such as its physical characteristics and the country’s strategic location, safety and security maritime industry, maritime environment, and governance.

According to YBhg. Datuk Isham Ishak, in his speech, “the maritime industry is comprised of a vast and interrelated network of elements, from industries to professions, trade and geopolitics, safety and security, culture and technology. When striving to be a ‘maritime nation’, there is a lot to learn. I’m pleased to see that these linked maritime elements are well-represented in the chapters of this book”.

MIMA also was delighted to receive a congratulations message from the Minister of Transport, YB Datuk Seri Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong, at the event.

The book serves as comprehensive literature on Malaysia’s maritime affairs, featuring the intertwined national, regional, and international interests at sea, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It also covers viable policy options and sound research on maritime industries, trade, geopolitics, safety and security, culture and technology, and the marine environment. These are the elements that will build Malaysia’s critical position on the global maritime front.

The launching ceremony was held virtually and attended by representatives of foreign missions in Malaysia including the Australian High Commission, the US Embassy, and the Embassy of Japan. The launching was also attended by representatives from the Royal Malaysian Navy, and Malaysian Army. MIMA expresses its appreciation to all parties involved contributing to launching the Book “Malaysia: Maritime Nation”. More details of the book are available on MIMA’s website www.mima.gov.my
