Exciting highlights on 26th October — Where a discussion and technical visit were held at Bintulu Port Authority (BPA) in conjunction with the GEF-8 project titled “Transforming Malaysia’s Port Infrastructure Development through a Nature-Centric Approach for Biodiversity Conservation and Land Degradation Control.”
Representing the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) were Dr. Syuhaida Ismail and Dr. Muhammad Nur Arif Othman, who joined BPA officials in exploring strategies for sustainable port development — including the establishment of the Bintulu Biodiversity Conservation Eco-Park.
Having been involved since the Project Preparation Grant (PPG) phase in 2023, BPA has reaffirmed its strong commitment to the project following endorsement from the GEF CEO, with planned collaborations through MoUs, technical cooperation, and engagement with local authorities.
This initiative represents Malaysia’s first large-scale integration of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into port development and policy — a step forward in enhancing biodiversity, strengthening ecosystem resilience, and mitigating coastal erosion, setting a model for sustainable port management both nationally and globally — all this with MIMA on the effort.
