MIMA Research Fellow & Head of the Centre for Straits of Malacca, Cheryl Rita, participated in the above seminar in her capacity as a Visiting Fellow at GRIPS, Tokyo. The forum was organised by the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia in cooperation with the Security Studies Unit of the Institute for Future Initiatives, University of Tokyo, Japan.
The session was moderated by Prof. Ryo Sahashi (University of Tokyo), featuring Prof. Cheng-Chwee Kuik (IKMAS, UKM) as a speaker, with Dr. Tomohiko Satake (Aoyama Gakuin University) and Dr. Antoine Roth (Tohoku University) as discussants. The forum gathered scholars and postgraduate students from Japan and abroad.
The dialogue explored recent developments in international relations, focusing on economic cooperation, ASEAN centrality, evolving trends in global and regional diplomacy, and challenges in the South China Sea. Emphasis was placed on strengthening regional cooperative mechanisms and architecture across Southeast Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific region to ensure peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
MIMA’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to contribute to regional maritime and geopolitical discourse, while strengthening institutional linkages with leading research institutions in Japan and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
