14 July 2025 – The Petronas Security Summit 2025, addressed emerging security risks facing the oil and gas industry. Dr. Sumathy Permal, Senior Fellow and Head, Maritime Security & Diplomacy, Maritime Institute of Malaysia, spoke on the panel entitled “Threats Without Borders” that identified geopolitical instability, threats to undersea cables, operations of dark fleets, and impacts of climate change such as floods, sea-level rise, and extreme hot temperatures are the emerging threats. Asia continues to be the region most affected by disasters in the world. All of it has a maritime dimension. As such, maritime governance and proactive strategies involving public and private partnerships is crucial to mitigate disruptions to the energy sector.
Director General of the National Security Council Datuk Raja Nurshirwan Zainal Abidin delivered the keynote address at the summit, while MIMA participated as panel speakers alongside with key agencies such as the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Cybersecurity Malaysia, Wisma Putra, and the National Defence University of Malaysia.
