National Workshop on Developing a Malaysia Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy 2025 – 2050

MIMA in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) Malaysia organised the National Workshop on addressing maritime decarbonisation. This initiative supports the country’s efforts in addressing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the maritime sector, as well as to drive the national commitments under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce and subsequently eliminate GHG emissions in stages through short-, medium- and long-term actions until 2050.

The Workshop was well represented by around 140 participants from related government ministries and agencies, maritime industry players, maritime associations, academia, private sectors, NGOs, and other relevant stakeholders. Discussions focused on 6 priority pillars i.e., Shipping; Ports; Bunkering; Research, Capacity Building and Awareness; Green Financing; as well as Green Shipping Corridor.

During the Workshop, Principal Assistant Secretary (Maritime Division), Noor Azila Shafie delivered MOT’s welcoming note, followed by a briefing by MIMA Research Fellow & Head of the Centre for Straits of Malacca, Cheryl Rita Kaur. The respective breakout groups had the opportunity to present their deliberations to the Workshop before the Closing Ceremony.

YBrs. Dr. Siva Sangar Krishnan, Under Secretary (Maritime Division), delivered his Closing Speech for MOT. He emphasised on MOT’s broader initiatives including through the formulation of the Malaysia Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy 2025 – 2050 as a vital opportunity to align national policies with the IMO to promote greater collaboration, foster innovation, and identify practical solutions that will enable decarbonisation of the national maritime sector. He further called for the Workshop deliberations to be included in shaping a comprehensive and actionable decarbonisation strategy for the nation.

YBhg. Dato’ Mohamed Suffian Awang, MIMA Chairman presented his closing speech, emphasising on the need for Malaysia to act proactively not only to meet global expectations but also to seize the economic opportunities that related green practices offer in order to support maritime decarbonisation in Malaysia. He further stressed on the importance of related stakeholders’ engagements by MOT and MIMA to strengthen national competitiveness and enhance the country’s reputation as a sustainable maritime hub.

MIMA will continue to work closely with the MOT towards developing a comprehensive, practical and forward-looking national maritime decarbonisation strategy.
