Last week in Singapore, the CIL Regional Roundtable on the Law of the Sea served as a vital Track-2 platform, gathering Southeast Asian experts to tackle critical maritime challenges.
MIMA contributed two key perspectives to the evolving legal discourse:
1. South China Sea Deep Dive
Mr. Ts. Egbert Adolf Naintin (Centre Head, Ocean Law & Policy) analyzed the complexities of the SCS, sharing Malaysia’s view on overlapping claims and grey zone tactics. His insights were informed by the recent MIMA SCS Conference 2025 findings.
2. Next-Gen Threats at Sea
Mr. Haikal Amran (Researcher, Maritime Security & Diplomacy) addressed the law of the sea dimension of emerging threats like Critical Underwater Infrastructure (CUI) and Maritime Autonomous Vehicles (MAV). He stressed the security implications and called for an ASEAN-led resolve.
The Roundtable underscored the importance of continuous regional engagement to foster cooperation and support evidence-based maritime policymaking — With MIMA at the frontlines of discussions.
