The Sabah International Blue Economy Conference (SIBEC) 2024 was successfully organised on 19-20 October 2024. SIBEC 2024 is a key event focused on the “blue economy,” that provided a platform for stakeholders from various sectors, including government, industry, academia, and environmental organisations, to discuss and collaborate on strategies that promote economic development while ensuring the sustainability of marine and coastal environments. It was officiated by YAB Dato’ Sri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Dato’ Mohamed Suffian Awang, MIMA Chairman spoke on Navigating Legal Waters: Critical Success Factors for Malaysia’s Blue Economy in the Interactive Forum (Underpinning the Blue Economy) held on 19 October 2024.
Dato’ Suffian highlighted five (5) critical success factors of legal and policy reforms to driving the prosperity of Malaysia’s Blue Economy; integrated maritime governance, strengthening monitoring and enforcement, environmental Protection and climate resilience, Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), and the strategic collaboration factors.
Additionally, Assoc. Prof. EUR. ING. TS. Ir. Dr. Syuhaida Ismail, MIMA’s Director of Research, moderated the session “Building a Sustainable Future Through Blue Economy Strategies,” facilitating rich discussions among experts on forward-thinking blue economy frameworks.
Other MIMA representatives also played significant roles during SIBEC 2024. Ts. ChM. Dr. Nur Zulaikha Yusof and Ms. Mazlinawati Abdul Majid, both Senior Researchers at MIMA, served as rapporteurs, contributing to the documentation and analysis of the discussions. Ms. Juwita Kumala Robin from MIMA’s Corporate Communications Unit was also in attendance, supporting MIMA’s engagement in the event.
MIMA continues to collaborate closely with the Sabah Maju Jaya Secretariat (SSMJ), further demonstrating its commitment to assisting Sabah in developing a comprehensive framework for its blue economy. This collaboration highlights the importance of strategic partnerships in driving Malaysia’s maritime sector toward a sustainable and prosperous future.
