14 August 2024: The Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Malaysia successfully hosted the 2nd Seminar on ASEAN-ROK Maritime Cooperation at DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur. The seminar, themed “Advancing Dialogue on Maritime Law Enforcement in the Indo-Pacific,” brought together experts and officials from ASEAN and South Korea to discuss pressing maritime security issues.
The event commenced with welcoming remarks from Datin Paduka Nur Ashikin Mohd Taib, Director General of the Department of Maritime Affairs, and H.E. Yeo Seung-bae, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Malaysia. Vice Admiral (M) Datuk Saiful Lizan Ibrahim, Acting Director General of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) delivered the opening speech, followed by a keynote address from Mr. Hwang Jun-shik, Director-General for International Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea.
A panel discussion moderated by Ms. Sumathy Permal, Senior Fellow at MIMA, featured distinguished speakers: Dr. Young Kil Park, Research Fellow at the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), Mr. Lawrence Anderson, Senior Fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore and Mr. Aristyo Rizka Darmawan, Scholar at Australian National University and Lecturer in International Law at Universitas Indonesia.
Key topics discussed during the panel included maritime security threats, law enforcement challenges, and sustainable management of marine resources.
