Synergizing Security and Economic Development: Malaysia’s Strategic Role in the Indonesia Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT)

24 July 2025 – The Maritime Institute of Malaysia was honoured to present a lecture at the Malaysian Armed Forces Staff College (MAFSC) in PUSPAHANAS. Dr. Sumathy Permal, Senior Fellow from the Centre for Maritime Security and Diplomacy, interacted with 180 students, including thirty-three overseas students, at this lecture series on Synergizing Security and Economic Development: Malaysia’s Strategic Role in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT).

 
During the lecture, she spoke on the current situation of maritime security in the Straits of Malacca that affects socio-economic development in the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, North Sumatra, and Riau, Indonesia.
 

The lecture also evaluated the implications of maritime security in the Straits of Malacca that affect the Malaysia-Indonesia economic corridor, as well as explored frameworks of security collaboration between Malaysia and Indonesia to empower strategic areas of high interest in the Trans Sumatera Corridor.
