On 19 May 2025, delegates from the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA), led by Assoc. Prof. EUR. ING. Ts. Ir. Dr. Syuhaida Ismail, Director of Research held a round table discussion with Konservasi Indonesia (KI). The visit was part of series engagements for four days working visit to Jakarta, Indonesia from 19 to 22 May 2025.

Also present were Dr. Muhammad Nur Arif Othman, Senior Researcher from the Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment (CMER) and Ms. Mazlinawati Abdul Majid Senior Researcher from the Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries (MEI). The MIMA delegates were warmly welcomed by Dr. Budiati Prasetiamartati, Ocean Program Director and Mr. Burhanuddin, Fisheries and Aquaculture Program Manager of KI.

The aim of the visit was to exchange knowledge and explore opportunities for research collaboration between neighbouring countries, aligning with MIMA’s current project on implementing Nature based solution (NbS) such as mangroves and artificial reefs in port development to conserve marine biodiversity as well as mitigate coastal degradation. KI also shared its ongoing project that integrate mangrove trees as a natural filtering system for Banyuwangi’s climate smart shrimp cultivation.

The discussion laid a strong foundation for future collaboration between MIMA and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Indonesia, in terms of knowledge exchange, expertise and projects that focus on current issues such as marine conservation, pollution and climate change.
