The Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) partnership with Sekretariat Sabah Maju Jaya (SSMJ) (under the Sabah State Government) hosted a dynamic workshop focused on the Sabah Blue Economy Framework, held from 17 – 19 January 2024.
The workshop was led by Mr. Ramlee Khariah, the Chief Operating Officer of SSMJ, and Assoc. Prof. EUR. Ing. Ts. Ir. Dr. Syuhaida Ismail, Director of Research (DOR) of MIMA.
It was also attended by YBhg. Datuk Haji (Datu) Rosmadi Datu Sulai, the Chief Coordinating Officer of SSMJ, alongside ChM. Dr. Nur Zulaikha Yusof, Ts. Egbert Adolf Naintin and Mazlinawati Abdul Majid, representatives from MIMA, played important roles as group facilitators.
The workshop was actively participated by 18 officials from Sabah ministries, departments, and agencies. Through discussions and group activities, participants shared knowledge and explored sustainable practices for managing Sabah’s marine ecosystems.
In addition to theoretical discussions, participants also visited Kg. Luanti in Ranau to learn about the Tagal system firsthand. This visit highlighted the cultural and ecological importance of the Tagal system in Sabah’s Blue Economy.
Given the Blue Economy’s substantial contribution to Sabah’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the local context, equipping participants with practical insights and a holistic perspective on its implications. By fostering collaboration and sharing expertise, the workshop not only propelled the development of Sabah’s Blue Economy Framework but also reinforced the commitment to preserving Sabah’s ecological integrity while promoting blue economic growth.
