A conference on “Blue Economy with Beyond Limits, Unleashing Economy” (Synedrio SMJ: Penerokaan Khazanah Baharu Melalui Konsep Ekonomi Biru di negeri Sabah) successfully organised on 14 December 2023, held at Le Meridien Hotel, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The conference was jointly organised by the Secretariat of Sabah Maju Jaya (SSMJ), Chief Minister’s Department of Sabah and the Asia Foundation (Malaysia), with the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA), The University of Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and the National University of Malaysia (UKM) as the organisers’ strategic partners.
MIMA plays a crucial role as the leading agency assisting SSMJ towards developing Sabah Blue Economy Strategic Framework aligned with Sabah Maju Jaya Roadmap: SMJ Development Plan 2021-2025.
The Keynote Address was delivered by YBhg. Datuk Haji (Datu) Rosmadi bin Datu Sulai, Chief Coordinator of the Secretariat of Sabah Maju Jaya (SSMJ), Chief Minister’s Department of Sabah, followed by Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Panglima Sr. Haji Safar bin Untong, JP, Sabah State Secretary delivered the opening remarks and officiated the conference.
The conference provided a platform for scholars and experts to share knowledge related to the Blue Economy theme. One of the highlights included YBhg. Dato’ Mohamed Suffian Awang, MIMA Chairman, representing MIMA in the exchange of the Letter of Intent (LOI) for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement with the Secretariat of Sabah Maju Jaya (SSMJ), Chief Minister’s Department of Sabah.
Assoc. Prof. EUR. ING. Ts. Ir. Dr. Syuhaida Ismail, MIMA Director of Research (DOR), actively participated as a part of the organiser’s secretariat and spoke on “Sustainable Seascape: The ESG-Driven Future of Sabah ‘s Blue Economy.” Ts. Egbert Adolf Naintin, Head of the Centre for Ocean Law and Policy (OLAP) of MIMA, also contributed as the moderator for the Interactive Forum (session 2) – 𝘗𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪 𝘥𝘢𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘧𝘢𝘢𝘵: 𝘌𝘬𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘯 𝘗𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘮 𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘯.
