Plastic-Free Ocean Programme

Tioman Island: 16 – 17 September 2019

In conjunction with Hari Alam Sekitar Negara, the Plastic-Free Ocean (PFO) programme was organised by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC) at Tioman Island. The programme ran during a week that also included the International Clean-up Day 2019. PFO was aimed at creating awareness and strengthening partnerships in addressing the marine litter issue.

MIMA's Centre of Coastal and Marine Environment (CMER) was invited to introduce the established Clean Coast Index (CCI) as a tool to monitor and measure the cleanliness of coastal areas in Malaysia. Deputy Minister of MESTECC YB Puan Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis launched the programme, which was held on the 16th and 17th of September.

1050Litter collected during PFO

Pollution from coastal litter negatively impacts not only the aesthetics of our beaches and coastal areas, but also the global economy. The CCI works as a measurement tool that focuses on using plastics as an indicator to ascertain the overall cleanliness of coastal areas.

YB Puan Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis and MIMA representatives

MIMA will continue to contribute to efforts addressing marine litter on both national and local levels in Malaysia.
