Collaboration between University of Malaya and Maritime Institute of Malaysia

The University of Malaya’s Innovative Technology Research Cluster (ITRC) and MIMA met recently to discuss collaborative opportunities on a joint-research project focusing on IR 4.0 in maritime industries.

Chaired by the Dean of Innovative Industry & Sustainability Science Prof Dr A.S Md. Abdul Haseeb and attended by representatives from MIMA’s Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries (MEI), the meeting also benefited from participation by academics from the Centre for Research in Industry 4.0, Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Faculty of Business and Accountancy, and Innovative Industry and Sustainability Science.

Discussion session at the meeting

The discussion focused on areas of mutual interest between MIMA and the UM Research Cluster team on moving Malaysia’s maritime industries towards the fourth industrial revolution. MIMA researcher, Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) presented on behalf of MIMA along with proposed joint-research activities on the adoption of IR 4.0 in maritime industries covering the areas of shipping, ports, logistics and shipbuilding ship repair (SBSR).

Overall, the meeting benefited from the exchange of views and experiences in research as well as suggestions on potential areas for future collaboration. The discussion succeeded in laying the groundwork for priority areas of common interest between MIMA and the UM Research Cluster team.
