MIMA’s Participation in the Yeosu Academy of the Law of the Sea

 The Yeosu Academy of the Law of the Sea, an initiative that is part of the Yeosu Project that inherited the spirit of EXPO 2012 Yeosu Korea and the Yeosu Declaration, provides education and training on ocean affairs to facilitate developing states in addressing their maritime challenges.

The 39 representatives from 28 countries at this two-week programme comprised staff of international organizations, government officials, researchers engaged in ocean policy-making, and professors and graduate students interested in ocean affairs. During the programme they were exposed to contemporary law of the sea and critical international and regional ocean-related issues. President Jin-Hyun Paik, Judge and President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), Professor Ted McDorman, Law Professor at the University of Victoria, Mr Robert Volterra, one of the world’s top public international law practitioners, and other law professors as well as international experts were invited to speak on related topics.

The training covered issues on legal ocean boundaries under UNCLOS, marine scientific research, and fishery management. Discussions also extended to new developments and current conditions in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, Biodiversity beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), and delimitation of maritime boundaries. The academy also conducted workshops focusing on disputes on marine living resources and maritime boundary delimitation to provide participants an in-depth understanding of contemporary international and regional issues.

Darshinee Nadarajan, Research Assistant at MIMA’s Centre for the Straits of Malacca participated in the programme and received a Diploma in the Law of the Sea from the Yeosu Academy. MIMA would like to express its gratitude to the academy for the opportunity to be involved in such training.
