The 19th APEC Roundtable Meeting on Sustainability of the Marine Environment

Taipei   
3 – 5 October 2018

In response to the call from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ocean-related Ministerial Meetings, Chinese Taipei organised this APEC Roundtable Meeting focusing on the involvement of the business/private sectors in the sustainability of the marine environment. Jointly organised by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) and the National Taiwan Ocean University, the forum served as a platform for discussing important issues linked to the APEC ocean agenda.

Local experts and participants from government and no-governmental organisations and academe, as well as representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States attended. Ms. Cheryl Rita, Head of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment was invited to represent MIMA.

The meeting discussed two themes i.e., Climate Change and Marine Ecosystems, and Marine Pollution. The first area discussed the emerging impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and resources, including how the public and private sectors could assist in mitigating its adverse impacts. Presentations covered broad topics including disaster risk financing aspects, coastal and marine ecosystems degradation and resources declines due to climate change phenomenon, as well as adaptation/mitigation and intervention mechanisms applied by countries. The second theme discussed issues and challenges associated with marine pollution especially those involving threats from marine debris and oil pollution.

The meeting yielded several recommendations for the APEC’s Oceans and Fisheries Working Group (OFWG) in 2019 covering governance issues, institutional frameworks, policies, financing mechanisms, stakeholder involvement, capacity development, and best practices and lessons learnt.
