Research Scoping Workshop on the Sustainability of the Straits of Melaka

The UCSI University organized the abovementioned workshop focused on identifying research gaps and generating fresh ideas to enhance sustainability in the Straits of Malacca. The workshop was attended by PhD students with research scopes relating to the straits.

In his introductory remarks, UCSI University Vice Chancellor and President, Senior Professor Dato' Dr Khalid Yusoff stressed on the need for diverse research focuses that will contribute to national efforts in promoting the importance of the Malacca Straits.

Professor Dato’ Dr Abu Bakar Jaafar, Director of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Ocean Thermal Energy Centre (OTEC) and Ms. Sumathy Permal, Fellow/Head of Centre for Straits of Malacca, Maritime Institute of Malaysia were invited as facilitators to present their views on the straits.

The discussion addressed issues and challenges in the straits with a view to holistically protect its sustainability elements as well as heritage and geo-strategic values while ensuring safety and security of navigation. In her presentation, Ms Sumathy recommended maintaining good order at sea and to be on par with the theme of The World Maritime Day 2018 "IMO 70: Our Heritage – Better Shipping for a Better Future”.

The organizers extended their appreciation to the invited speakers for their fruitful insights which assisted in initiating a brainstorming session among the PhD students on potential research areas in the Straits of Malacca.
