MyWIMA seeks to strengthen linkages among women in the maritime sector, empowering their roles at the highest level of management, and highlighting and optimizing their expertise in order to more effectively contribute to the maritime sector in Malaysia.

The establishment of MyWIMA is in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) vision to:

a) Maintain, promote and demonstrate the linkage between the ITCP and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

1032

While the IMO plays a major role in implementing a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), MyWIMA’s focus is on SDGs 5 on gender equality.

b) Strengthen the role of women in the maritime sector

1033

The International Transport Workers’ Federation estimates that only 2% of the world’s maritime workforce is made up of women. It is time to improve on this by enhancing opportunities for women and changing the culture of prejudice towards women in the maritime sector.
