Cdr Ang presenting on Coastal Shipping for the ASEAN region

He proposed that coastal shipping be made an important mode of transportation for the archipelagic part of South East Asia to help reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. Such shipping could also enhance intra-ASEAN connectivity in the three major sub-regions of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia & the Philippines – East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), the Indonesia, Malaysia & Thailand – Growth Triangle (IMT-GT), and the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS).

Cdr Ang also presented three development strategies for coastal shipping in the region: the Philippines RO-RO network, ASEAN Single Shipping Market (ASSM) and short sea shipping (SSS). The proposal was adopted by the UNESCAP for its future study in enhancing transport connectivity in the region.
