MIMA’s Chairman, YBhg. Dato’ Mohamed Suffian Awang and the Centre for Maritime Security and Diplomacy (MSD) researchers, Fellow Sumathy Permal, Jeslyn Tan, and Alif Hidayat visited Prof. M. Taylor Fravel, Director of the MIT Security Studies Program on Thursday 19 May 2022 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during their official trip to the United States.
Together they discussed and exchanged ideas on the maritime security concerns in the Asia-Pacific. In addition, they further analysed how the United States' Indo-Pacific Economic Framework can benefit the Southeast Asian region.

Fellow/Head of the Centre for Straits of Malacca (SOM), Cheryl Rita, two researchers and the Head of MIMA Publications Unit, En. Mohd Khairulanuar Manshor welcomed the delegation.
The discussions focused on potential collaboration to advance international and state-level port and maritime development agendas between MIMA and ITP.

The World Port Conference 2022 took place in Vancouver, Canada, from 16 to 18 May 2022. YBhg. Datuk Dr Sabirin Ja'afar, the Director-General of MIMA, headed the delegation from MIMA, accompanied by the Head and a Researcher from the Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries (MEI).
The Welcoming Remarks were delivered by Mr Robin Silvester, the President and CEO of Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and Captain K. Subramaniam the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) President, who is also the Port Klang Authority (PKA) General Manager.
Among the issues highlighted during the conference were the resilient port network in terms of supply chain and performance and interconnectivity across the world's ports as significant competitiveness factors for ports.
On the last day, we were invited to have a port visit along the Vancouver coastal area to look at the Port of Vancouver transport system, which includes cruises, yachts, SeaBus, seaplanes, and other land transportation.
The 3-day conference was also attended by YBhg. Datuk Isham Ishak, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia (MoT) and other Malaysian delegation from the industry. ...
On 19 May 2022, MIMA engaged in a session by Mr Pradeep A. Singh from the University of Bremen & IASS Postdam, Germany. Chaired by Ms Cheryl Rita, Fellow & Head of the Centre for Straits of Malacca (SOM), the discussion focused on 'Recent developments in ongoing multilateral negotiations pertaining to marine areas beyond national jurisdiction: Deep seabed mining and the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity'.
MIMA researchers from the different divisions joined the discussions alongside MIMA Distinguished Fellow Prof. Dato' Dr Nor Aieni Mokhtar.
The session highlighted recent developments on the international platform and the status and need for Malaysia to participate in the negotiations.

MIMA delegation headed by the Chairman of MIMA, YBhg. Dato' Mohamed Suffian Awang was welcomed by the Chairman of Stockton Center for International Law, Prof. James Kraska, to the Alexander C. Cushing International Law Conference: International Law and Conflict at Sea hosted by the U.S. Naval War College from 16 - 18 May 2022 in Newport, Rhode Island.
Ms Sumathy Permal, Fellow/Head of the Centre for Maritime Security and Diplomacy (MSD), was among the presenters during the 11 sessions of the conference. She presented on the Good Order at Sea: Maritime Regime and Security Framework in the South China Sea. At the same time, Ms Jeslyn Tan, a Researcher from MSD, presented the "Geopolitical Relevance of Maritime Non-Traditional Security Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific" during the Indo-Pacific Maritime Security Challenges Session.
The conference brings together academic experts, policymakers, and practitioners for panel discussions and presentations that focus on selected aspects of international law and conflict at sea. It was a great opportunity for MIMA to explore more on the subjects discussed and exchange ideas with other global think tanks. ...
