Training Course on Marine Information Technology and Ocean Governance

Tianjin, China

The three-week training workshop, organised by IOI-China Regional Center, was themed Marine Information Technology and Ocean Governance. It was attended by 31 participants comprising government officials, researchers, and academia involved in marine affairs from the ASEAN region. The training involved intensive class lectures, experience-sharing, as well as study tours and field trips. Welcoming remarks for the programme were delivered by Counselor Sun Lushan from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The training covered ocean governance issues and allowed participants to strengthen their knowledge on UNCLOS, Marine Information Technology, Sustainable Development Goal 14, and Marine Big Data Management. Course presentations were delivered by experts from diverse background such as engineers, scientists and technical person. The training modules covered topics on oceanography, environmental issues, marine economy, and marine big data applications. During the sessions, participants had productive and fruitful discussions while learning from the good practices of other countries.

Overall, participants benefited from the fresh insights on ocean management including the need to reduce stresses on oceans and for their sustainable use.

MIMA was represented at the course by Norsyihan Jamal a Researcher at MIMA’s Centre for the Straits of Malacca. MIMA would like to express its appreciation towards the organisers for including the institute in this programme.
