More than 30 agency representatives from the SOMS’ littoral states participated 10 of which were from the Marine Department Malaysia, Port Klang Authority and the Penang Port Commission. Cheryl Rita, Head of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment (CMER) represented MIMA.

The Malaysian delegation

The SOMS is among the most important channels worldwide with an annual throughput of more than 100,000 vessels carrying about 30 percent of the world’s trade and 50 percent of its energy. The heavy use of SOMS promotes trade and development but also exposes it to heightened risks of maritime incidents that pose challenges to maritime administrations in the region.

During the meeting

The rapid growth of scientific and technical information and new technologies such as big data, cloud computing, internet of things, artificial intelligence, and others play a more significant role in modern maritime supervision and services. This workshop thus provided a platform for participants to share and exchange information, knowledge and practices of maritime informatisation towards enhancing navigational safety and marine environmental protection in the area as well as forging further cooperation between littoral and user states.

Participants had the opportunity to visit the local facilities

On-site discussions and visits

The outcome from this workshop will be presented at the upcoming CF-SOMS meeting later this year in Indonesia.
