AKEPT Sustainability Leadership Programme

Johor Bahru, Malaysia
3 – 8 March 2019

The Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) under the Ministry of Education Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) co-organised the above programme aimed at exposing selected representatives from the different higher education and research institutions in Malaysia on the various environmental sustainability issues in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia.

During the programme

The programme encompassed elements of experiential learning, action research, and a participatory approach involving local communities, governmental representatives and other stakeholders. The programme included classroom-based lectures, group discussions and presentations, site visits, and consultation with local communities.

Various activities were conducted during the programme

The case study focused on the area surrounding Mukim Serkat in the Pontian District and Tanjung Kupang area. The issues surrounding sustainability in this area include the challenges posed by rapid development and mega projects and their impact on the environment e.g., RAMSAR sites in the Tanjung Piai and Pulau Kukup areas and the need for a sustainable economic development plan in the study area.

Site visits to the Johor RAMSAR sites were conducted for on-the-ground experience for the participants

Cheryl Rita, Head of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment (CMER) of MIMA spoke on sustainable environment management concerning the RAMSAR sites in Johor. She provided an overview of the environmental significance of the area and the need to protect the parks from the increasing pressures from human activities both from land- and sea-based sources in the surrounding area.

Consultations were also conducted with stakeholders on the ground including the local communities for sustainability assessment and recommendations

Overall, participants gained rich experience on not only importance of the science-policy nexus for enhanced management but also in linking the action programmes to the respective sustainable development goals (SDGs).

This was the first time that MIMA was directly involved in an AKEPT programme and we will continue to support similar events in the future.
