Visit by Peking University, Beijing, China

The visit by undergraduate students at Peking University was to expose them to best practices adopted by MIMA as a policy research institute that serves as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for maritime-related matters. The students were on a visit to research on the maritime economy in Southeast Asia including Malaysia under the theme ‘Miracles on the Strait of Malacca’.

Deputy Director General of MIMA, Dr Rizal Abdul Kadir officiated the event while Cdr Ang from the Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries spoke on the key functions of MIMA and the roles of its five research centres.

During the question and answer session, Dr Rizal reiterated the strategic importance of the Straits of Malacca as a waterway that is an important trade route connecting Far East and Asia. He emphasised on the resources in Malaysian waters which are an important source of food, revenue, and human security. Malaysia and China have a common responsibility under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) to ensure the sustainability of the resource for future generations.

The students took the occasion to enquire on the current status and challenges of maritime research, besides expressing keen interest on the happenings of Malaysia as a maritime nation. Overall, the visit provided a platform to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and actual practices in the maritime domain.
