Diplomats and representatives from 21 IORA member countries attended the 8th Bi-Annual Meeting of the IORA Committee of Senior Officials, the 5th Indian Ocean Dialogue (IOD), and the 24th Indian Ocean Academy Group (IORAG) hosted recently by the Republic of South Africa. Malaysia was represented by Ambassador Mohamad Nizan Mohamad and Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) of MIMA.

The Senior Officials meeting discussed the implementation of the IORA Concord and Action Plans 2017 – 2021 which were formulated when Indonesia was the IORA chair and launched during the IORA Leaders’ Summit in Jakarta on 7 March 2017.

The 5th IOD covered four sessions of talks and panel discussion by speakers from IORA member states. In session IV: Economic Development in the Indian Ocean Rim, Cdr Ang presented on ‘Enhancing Cooperation Towards Improved Economic Growth & Development.’ The session was moderated by Prof Prosper Ngowi of Tanzania and included speakers from India, Thailand, and Mauritius.

IORA Meeting in session

The 24th IORAG discussed the outcomes of the 5th IOD and the various IORA special agencies’ and country reports. Cdr Ang presented MIMA’s Terms of Reference as the IORA Centre of Excellence (CoE) on maritime affairs.

MIMA would like to thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) for the opportunity to present on MIMA’s role as a CoE on maritime issues at the above meetings.
