ASEAN Mechanisms for Maritime Security Cooperation (II) – Surveying Priorities Co-organised CSIS - RSIS

The project, comprising a series of workshop inaugurated by RSIS and CSIS in 2017, stock-takes existing maritime cooperation frameworks and initiatives by assessing the various degrees of mechanisms and its challenges. It includes how ASEAN countries view the different mechanisms and which forum should be prioritised and enhanced. The welcoming address was delivered by Dr. Philips J. Vermonte, Executive Director of CSIS, Jakarta and H.E. Ambassador Ong Keng Yong, Executive Deputy Chairman of RSIS, Singapore. The workshop examined each ASEAN nation’s domestic and foreign policy priorities relating to maritime issues and mapping out shared priorities for cooperative efforts.

Discussion Sessions between Fellow Speakers


Organisers CSIS - RSIS with Chairman and Fellow Speakers

Divided into four sessions namely Maritime Boundaries and Safety, Southeast Asia’s Ocean Economy, Current Southeast Asian Maritime Security Initiatives, and an Open Discussion on mapping ASEAN’s shared priorities, the workshop evaluated all layers of cooperation with speakers from relevant countries’ sharing their perspectives on national, regional, and international mechanisms, processes, and the way forward. MIMA’s Senior Researcher from the Centre for Straits of Malacca, Ms. Jalila Abdul Jalil presented on Session I titled “Maritime Boundaries and Cooperation Towards Ensuring Safety at Sea: Malaysia’s Perspectives”. Overall, the discussions were indeed enlightening and valuable for all speakers as forum for sharing of experiences, friendship and networking.
