Ms Chin Yim Leng presenting at the summit

Ms Chin from the Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries presented on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) where its infrastructural connection with multidimensional transportation networks may be beneficial to the nation in offering new markets and foreign investments. She also highlighted the potential risks and challenges presented by the initiative especially in regard to mega development projects involving huge amounts of soft loans. As such, risk mitigation measures such as formulating economic plans specifically for BRI projects are vital to reduce the reliance on soft loans offered by Chinese multilateral development banks.

Delegates showed keen interest on the political challenges of the initiative in Malaysia and enquired on the current status of BRI projects. Ms Chin mentioned the government’s undertaking to review existing BRI projects based on a series of benefit and risk assessments to ensure pragmatic outcomes for the nation.
