MIMA Talk on certification programme for sustainably caught seafood

18 July 2018

Sustainable seafood certification is aimed at increasing consumer awareness of the environmental impact and sustainability of the seafood purchased and consumed. The measures applied in the process are benchmarked against issues such as ensuring sustainable fish stocks are maintained in the oceans, minimisation of environmental impacts, and the adoption of effective fisheries management practices.

In line with the above, MIMA hosted a Talk on Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Fisheries Standard and its Progress in the Region by Ms. Sheryl Torres-Wu, the MSC Programme Director of Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. Her presentation provided an overview of the importance of the MSC programme, the fisheries standards used, government involvement, engagement with industry, as well as challenges faced in the region.

The talk was attended by MIMA researchers and stakeholders from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTEC). Dr Rizal b. Abdul Kadir, Deputy Director General of MIMA Chaired the meeting.
