Talk by the Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University, USA
2 July 2018
The latest in the series of MIMA’s sharing sessions was a talk by Ms. Allison Besch, the Director of Executive Education Programs and the Career and Professional Development Center Team Lead at the Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University, USA. Ms. Besch’s presentation on the “State of Marine Planning (MSP) in the USA: Training as a Solution” was based on the US model of promoting capacity building through training relevant stakeholders in MSP.
MSP brings together multiple users of the oceans e.g., government, industry, conservation, recreation and others to make informed and coordinated decisions on the sustainable use of marine spaces and resources. It is a tool to identify where and how an ocean area is being used and resources and habitats coexist.
Besides MIMA researchers from the different Centres, representatives from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Department of Marine Park Malaysia, Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences of the University of Malaya, University Malaysia Terengganu, and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Malaysia attended the talk.
