2018 International Marine Culture Conference Taiwan

16th – 17th May 2018

MIMA researcher Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) presented a paper titled “Malaysia’s Maritime Industries as a Cluster” at the above conference hosted by the National Kaohsiung University of Science & Technology. The conference was officiated by the university’s Vice-President, Dr. Fung Rong-Fong and gathered experts and marine practitioners from Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Vietnam, and host Taiwan. The university’s lecturers and undergraduates participated actively while valuable ideas and information on maritime technologies were exchanged among the speakers in the conference.

In his talk, Cdr Ang gave an overview of Malaysia as a maritime nation and the development of maritime industries in Malaysia, namely ports, shipping, logistics and ship building ship repair (SBSR). He also spoke on Malaysia-Taiwan trade and highlighted recent challenges and prospects of the country’s maritime industries.

In conjunction with the conference, the university arranged for speakers from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam to talk at a business forum in Taipei hosted by the Maritime & Ports Bureau of Taiwan. Participants comprising Taiwanese government officials and businessmen took the opportunity to enquire about investment potential in the region under the New South Bound Policy.

MIMA wish to express its appreciation to the National Kaohsiung University of Science & Technology for the opportunity to share Malaysia’s maritime industries at the forum and looks forward to further collaboration and exchange of ideas with other maritime institutions.
