Ms Chin Yim Leng presenting at the conference

Ms Chin from the Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries gave a talk on Malaysia’s maritime industry and the BRI. She highlighted that the Malacca Gateway is an example of joint infrastructure development between Malaysian and Chinese corporations. The mentioned project comprising three reclaimed and one natural island is a National Project in the government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP). While BRI may offer numerous benefits in the form of investments, jobs, and property development, there are also potential risks and challenges such as domination by the stronger party. This calls for several risk mitigation measures via policy coordination, financial integration, connecting infrastructure and people-to-people bonds to ensure the outcomes are in the nation’s interests.

Speakers during the Q&A Session

Participants took the opportunity to enquire on the current status and challenges of the Malacca Gateway project, as well as showed keen interest in the potential political and economic risks of the initiative on Malaysia. Ms Chin emphasised that Malaysia should develop a visionary policy to oversee the initiative. A series of benefit and risk assessments should be made on a regular basis to ensure positive outcomes for the nation.
