Seminar on Reasserting Malaysia’s Maritime Boundary: New Developments

The Faculty of Law, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and the International Law Unit of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) organised the abovementioned seminar to create greater awareness among students on issues of maritime boundaries and international law.


During the programme

Speakers included Professor Dato’ Dr. Rahmat Mohamad, Dean of the UiTM Faculty of Law, Dr. Mohd Hazmi Mohd Rusli, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Syariah and Law, USIM, and Cheryl Rita Kaur, Head of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment, MIMA.


The panellists

Representatives from several government agencies including the Prime Minister’s Department and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present. 

The papers presented focused on the current situation and relevant issues in the South China Sea (SCS) and the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SOMS), as well as challenges in addressing environmental and resources protection due to overlapping and unresolved maritime boundaries.

Discussions at the forum emphasised the need to continuously engage with neighbouring states in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to ensure related issues and challenges are addressed based on international law.
