Introduction Meeting with Mr. Bradley A. Hurst

The Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) hosted a delegation from the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur headed by Mr. Bradley A. Hurst, Counselor for Public Affairs, Mr. Mike Casey, political officer, and Ms. Fiona Teo, Cultural Affairs Assistant (Education USA Coordinator).

The discussions mainly focused on current issues on the South China Sea and maritime security in the region. Ms. Sumathy Permal, Research Fellow/Centre Head for the Centre for Straits of Malacca exchanged views on issues concerning Freedom of Navigation (FON) in the South China Sea and geo-strategic issues.

Ms. Sumathy also discussed the Japan infrastructure development project for ASEAN and China-ASEAN cooperation in the South China Sea focusing on the Decade for the Protection of Coastal and Marine Environment in the South China Sea (2017-2027). She also briefed the meeting on MIMA’s proposed activities in 2018 including organizing conferences on the Belt and Road Initiative, Renewing Cooperation in the South China Sea, Law of the Sea Training, a Japan Crisis Management Mechanism workshop focusing on the Indo-Pacific, and the launching on MIMA’s Coffee Table Book in conjunction with the institute’s 25th Anniversary.

The two parties agreed to continue exploring and participating in opportunities for cooperation in areas such as maritime security and South China Sea issues.
