Networking with like-minded international research institutions

Visit by the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), University of Plymouth and University of Exeter UK

A team of researchers and scientists from institutions in the United Kingdom visited MIMA to highlight their current collaborative project in Malaysia as well as interdisciplinary research initiatives in Southeast Asia focusing on the stewardship of marine ecosystems.

Chaired by the MIMA Director General YBhg. Dato’ Chin Yoon Chin (Ret.) and attended by representatives from the different Centres within MIMA, the meeting also benefited from participation by officers from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and Department of Marine Park Malaysia.

During the meeting

Prof Melanie Austen, Head of Science (Sea and Society) of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) delivered a presentation focusing on the priority areas which included, among others the Sea and Society, Marine Ecosystems Models and Predictions, Marine Ecology and Biodiversity, Earth Observation Science and Applications, and evidence-based environmental solutions to societal challenges in the UK and recent focus in this region.

Some of the areas of application included policy making and regulations in the marine environment, marine planning, as well as blue growth in the relevant maritime sectors. Prof Austen also emphasised on the ongoing collaborative programmes on marine ecosystems research and case studies to exemplify the application and benefits. Likewise, some of the priority research areas and projects undertaken were highlighted by MIMA.

The team emphasised the current project in Malaysia and case study in Sabah as part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and networks that focuses on building capability to secure a better future by linking people and nature in the Southeast Asia region for the health, wellbeing, food needs and livelihoods of coastal communities.

Overall, the meeting benefited from the exchange of views and experiences in maritime research as well as suggestions on potential areas for future collaboration. The discussion managed to set a base towards prioritising areas of mutual interests between MIMA and the UK research team.
