MIMA Seminar room

The above AGM held by MIMA in collaboration with the Marine Department Malaysia was attended by women involved in the maritime sector from both the government and private sectors. This AGM was MyWIMA’s first since its establishment and a continuation of the previous meeting held last June at MIMA.

MyWIMA seeks to strengthen linkages among women in the maritime sector, empowering their roles at the highest level of management, and highlighting and optimizing their expertise in order to more effectively contribute to the maritime sector in Malaysia.

The establishment of MyWIMA is in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) vision to:

a) Maintain, promote and demonstrate the linkage between the ITCP and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

While the IMO plays a major role in implementing a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), MyWIMA’s focus is on SDGs 5 on gender equality.

b) Strengthen the role of women in the maritime sector

The International Transport Workers’ Federation estimates that only 2% of the world’s maritime workforce is made up of women. It is time to improve on this by enhancing opportunities for women and changing the culture of prejudice towards women in the maritime sector.

Participants at the meeting

The main objective of the AGM was to inform members of the main purpose for establishing MyWIMA, and its vision and the objectives. Other agenda items discussed at the meeting related to administrative matters, member representation, and membership fee structure.

MyWIMA's activities for 2018 were also addressed aimed at moving the agenda forward and to attract more women in the maritime sector to join the association.

Activities to be carried out include:

a) Online membership registration;
b) Campaign thru flyers, write-ups, and developing the MyWIMA web;
c) Organising the first MyWIMA National Conference; and
d) Hosting a MyWIMA Regional Conference.
