In a paper titled ‘Challenges & Prospects of Shipping & Logistics Services’ presented at the Investment Committee Meeting at MIDA, MIMA researcher Cdr Ang Chin Hup (R) elaborated on the issues related to shipping and logistics services in Malaysia.

Also present at the meeting which was chaired by the Minister of International Trade and Industry YBhg Dato’ Sri Mustapha Mohamad were the Chief Executive Officer of MIDA, Dato’ Azman Mahmud, Chairman of Shipping Association Malaysia, Mr Ooi Lean Hin, President of Federation of Malaysian Freight Forwarders (FMFF) Mr Alvin Chua Seng Wah, and heads of regional corridors in the country.


MIDA’s Investment Committee

In his paper, Cdr Ang gave an overview of the supply chain of maritime transportation industry which includes ports, shipping, logistics services and ship building and ship repairing which have contributed significantly to the nation’s Growth Domestic Product and employment. He highlighted that these industries are currently facing challenges from global competition, the emergence of E – commerce, and contribute to the current deficit in the nation’s balance of payments.

Cdr Ang recommended that the investment committee look into these industries as a complete cluster rather by individual sectors. The committee was also apprised of the importance of big data and Internet of Things (IoT) in these industries as the nation is moving towards Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Following the meeting, a Ship Building Ship Repairing (SBSR) Advisory Panel was set up at MIDA. Its first meeting on 5 December 2017 was attended by MIMA researcher and other maritime industrialists, experts, and relevant government officials.
