The above conference on the Maritime Silk Road with the topic “Insiatif Laluan Sutera” was officially opened by Dr. Shaliza bte Ibrahim, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) of the University of Malaya.
It was held for the very first time in the national language and well-received by participants including students of institutions higher learning.
A number of noted academicians and experts in political science, including Dr. R Tuty Nur Mutia Enoch Muas from Universitas Indonesia and Dr Johanes Herlijanto from Universitas Pelita Harapan, Indonesia presented their research papers.

The conference’s opening theme titled ‘Interaksi Dunia Melayu-China dalam Inisiatif Laluan Sutera: Kesinambungan dan Pengisisan’, was delivered by Professor Datuk Dr Awang Sariyan, the sitting Chair of Malay Studies at the Beijing Foreign Studies University.
The Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) was represented by Cdr. Ang Chin Hup (R) who presented a paper titled “Laluan Sutera Abad Ke-21: Perkembangan dan Impak di ASEAN dan Lautan Hindi”. He described the background of the MSR initiative and its influence and impacts on the Asian continent and the Indian Ocean from the economic and international politics perspectives.
