In promoting the need for better understanding of the importance of key role played by officials, scholars, policy makers, and NGOs, the forum brought together representatives from the different stakeholders group to discuss ocean governance in the country.
The invited panel consisted of Ms. Cheryl Rita Kaur, Head of the Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment MIMA and Associate Fellow at the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), UMT; Prof Dr Wan Izatul Asma, Head of Research Program (Ocean Governance), INOS UMT; and Ms. Sharifah Ruqaiyah, Senior Field Biologist, WWF-Malaysia.
The panel shared their experiences in examining the growing need for the formulation and implementation of integrated ocean policies, legislations, institutional frameworks, monitoring as well as enforcement. Lessons were drawn from the different perspectives i.e., academe, NGO field, and policy analyses towards sharing best practices for the development of national and local ocean related policies.

The forum was attended by more than 100 participants from government agencies, students and scholars from local universities. Discussions centred on the need to formulate effective science-policy nexus and improved awareness and understanding for demand for more effective integration between the different groups of stakeholders for better governance.

MIMA hopes to continue the mutual collaboration with related stakeholders to promote effective ocean governance.
