IORA TRAINING PROGRAMME ON ENHANCING SUSTAINABLE PORT SERVICES AND MANAGEMENT FOR IMPROVED MARITIME CONNECTIVITY

The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) hosted the IORA Training programme on ‘Enhancing Sustainable Port Services & Management in the Indian Ocean Region for Improved Maritime Connectivity’ from 11 to 14 July 2017 in Mutsamudu, Anjouan, the Union of Comoros in Africa. The training programme was organised by the IORA Secretariat in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Comoros. The event was attended by senior government and port officials of IORA member states including Malaysia. The event was graced by the Comoros President Mr Azali Assoumani.

MIMA researcher Cdr. Ang Chin Hup (R) was appointed as the speaker for the programme. The training comprised 5 modules featuring economic and financial port management, port strategic planning & management, commercial management, sustainable port management tools, and safety, security and environmental protection. During the training, Cdr. Ang highlighted the success of Port Klang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in container shipping through the public private partnership (PPP). He also showcased the recent green initiatives by Malaysia’s ports leading to the APEC Port Services Network’s green port awards.

During the country brief, participants from Mauritius, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and the host country Comoros presented their case studies on the best practices and lesson learnt on sustainable port services and management. Participants also shared experiences, insights, and ideas among themselves on improving port operations. Participants from the Comoros looked forward to learn from Malaysia’s ports particularly in the areas of PPP and green port policy.

In Anjouan, participants also visited the port in Mutsamudu and historical monuments in Domoni including the mausoleum of the leader of Comoros’ independence. The hospitality extended by the people in the island was overwhelming.

The experience to conduct port training in Comoros was memorable. MIMA would like to express its appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their trustt in allowing the institute to showcase itself as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) and projecting Malaysia as a maritime nation under the slogan NegaraKu: Negara Maritim.
