The Second Hongqiao International Economic Forum and the Third Grandview-ASEAN Think Tank Dialogue

Early in November this year, Cdr. Ang Chin Hup (R) from the Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries (MEI) was in China as MIMA's representative for two events relating to maritime economics.

From the 4th to the 5th of November, Cdr. Ang attended the Second Hongqiao International Economic Forum as a speaker, courtesy of an invite by the hosts, the National Institute for Global Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Shanghai, China. An estimate of 270 think tank experts and media journalists from 90 countries attended the forum. Malaysia was also represented by two other participants from the University of Malaya and the Centre for New Inclusive Asia, respectively.

Cdr. Ang presented a paper entitled “Blue Economy for the Belt Road Initiative (BRI): The IORA Model” during a session on Economic Growth & Inclusive Development. The session was jointly moderated by Dr. Ding Kuisong from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Ms. Pauline Elaine Fuller Riak from Rumbek University of Science and Technology, South Sudan. The session also included speakers from Azerbaijan, Belgium, Denmark, India, Lao PDR, and Switzerland. Presenters actively exchanged their opinions between the Chinese and foreign moderators' views.

Prior to the forum in Shanghai, Cdr. Ang participated in the Third Grandview-ASEAN Think Tank Dialogue in Zhanjiang on the 31st of October. Based on the theme “Blue Economy Partnership: Navigating the future of a More Connected Maritime East Asia”, experts from ASEAN member states and the host country discussed ways to design a structural framework and strategic approaches to foster better cooperation and mutual assistance to a blue economy partnership.

MIMA extends its hearty gratitude to both the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Grandview Institute for the opportunity to participate in these events. It provided a good opportunity for speakers and representatives from all over the world to network and share their knowledge in enhancing economic development and the blue economy.
