In his more than fifteen years at MIMA, Nizam has undertaken many research projects. His primary research interests are environmental law and policies in relation to marine biodiversity conservation, marine pollution prevention and coastal zone management. His research work involve carrying out data collection and analysis, writing reports and opinion papers, participating in international negotiations as a member of the Malaysian government delegation, presenting papers at national and international conferences and publishing journal articles. The outputs from the research projects are listed in the following sections.

In addition, to the research activities, Nizam was also the coordinator for MIMA’s Maritime Awareness Programme which was funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) from 1996 to 1998 which also included the “Maritime Malaysia” column in the New Straits Times.
