Center for Maritime Economics and Industries (MEI)

Introduction

The thrust of the Center for Maritime Economics and Industries (MEI) research is in unraveling the mechanics of what makes the maritime economic activities and industries. Understanding what make these economic activities tick and identifying the economic factors that influence the various industries within the maritime sector is essentially the core principle that guides our research at MEI.

MEI was established in June 2008 as the result of a reorganization exercise in MIMA involving its research centers. Previously known as the Center for Economics Studies and Ocean Industries, the name change better reflects the areas of research at the center, although maritime economics remains at the core of its research focus. Its principle objectives are to conduct timely, relevant research in this field to advance Malaysia’s maritime economic interests in sectors such as ports, shipping and offshore oil and gas, and in maritime trade in particular. In its endeavor, MEI always strives to unearth new dimensions and offer fresh perspectives on current issues, and to contribute to the advancement of the literature in maritime economics and to come up with recommendations that can be useful for policymaking and to the maritime industry.

Projects undertaken

Over the years, MEI has successfully undertaken research projects in various topics and segments of maritime economics and ocean industries. They include port competitiveness, ship financing, multimodal transport, marine leisure industry and various maritime trade issues, among many others. MEI always strives to be at the forefront of cutting-edge research in maritime economics and industries to provide solid, implementable policy recommendations to the Malaysian government and the maritime industry.

Current projects

Among the projects undertaken by the center for 2008 are in the areas of port tariff, frontier maritime resources and ‘green’ port. Its flagship project for the year is the development of the Terms of Reference for a National Shipping Policy which is hoped to provide the platform for the long-term development of Malaysia’s shipping sector in a comprehensive and systematic manner. In addition, the center has been engaged to work on an Independent Market Report of the shipping industry for a Shipping Trust, and is actively involved in the Focus Group Maritime Transport Services under the Malaysian Logistics Council.

Achievements

Testimony to its contribution in the field of maritime economics research, MEI’s researchers are often invited to present papers and talks at seminars and conferences worldwide. MEI has developed extensive contacts with policymakers, industry players and the academia worldwide. The center emphasizes on networking as an indispensable strategy in its quest to forge an international reputation for itself and to contribute to MIMA’s aspiration to become a regional center of excellence in maritime research.
