Centre for the Strait of Malacca (SOM)

Introduction

The importance of the Strait of Malacca as a Sea Lane of Communication (SLOC) to the world is well established. More than 70,000 vessels reported and were recorded in the Marine Department’s Vessel Traffic Management system database. With the advent of world trade and global economy, the importance of Malacca Strait as a SLOC will be further enhanced and the risk of pollution further increased. In the absence of a centre in the country or region to conduct integrated study, data collection and to act as depository for the myriad of information concerning this important strait used for international navigation, MIMA has endorsed for the formation of the Centre for the Strait of Malacca in its 64th Board Meeting on the 28th of February 2007. The Centre was established in April 2007.
