Dr. Mark J. Valencia is an internationally known maritime policy analyst, political commentator and consultant focused on Asia. He was a Senior Fellow with the East-West Center for 26 years where he originated, developed and managed international, interdisciplinary projects on maritime policy and international relations in Asia. He has a M.A. in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island and a Ph.D in Oceanography from the University of Hawaii. Before joining the East-West Center, Dr. Valencia was a Lecturer at the Universiti Sains Malaysia and a Technical Expert with the UNDP Regional Project on Offshore Prospecting based in Bangkok.

Dr Forbes is an Adjunct Professor and the Map Curator (since 1975) at the University of Western Australia. He was an Adjunct Associate Professor (1997-2006) at the Department of Spatial Sciences, Curtin University and is presently a Visiting Research Fellow at the Maritime Institute of Malaysia.

He is a professional cartographer, lecturer, supervisor to Graduate and Under-graduate students at UWA and Curtin University. He has developed a close honourary research/working relationship with MIMA since its inception in 1994, through the offering of technical advice and attendances at Conferences, Seminars, publication of Occasional Papers, compiling and publishing two atlases: Atlas of Malaysia's Maritime Space (1998) and Malaysia's Maritime Realm (2008), articles for MIMA Bulletin and facilitating Workshops on the cartographic aspects and geographical concepts of maritime boundary delimitation and archival research on terrestrial and maritime boundary issues.

Dr Faust served the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN agency aimed at integrating developing countries into the world economy, with distinction for 20 years.  He holds a PhD in Political Science (Economics), University of Münster, Germany.  He has vast experience in maritime transport development and has successfully conducted many training programs on the subject around the world.  Dr Faust has also presented papers and spoken at various seminars and conferences on the topic of maritime transportation and trade logistics worldwide.  He has conducted the Strategic Planning for Senior Shipping Managers (STRATSHIP) workshop at MIMA four times.  An immensely popular workshop, STRATSHIP is specially designed to provide shipping executives with a powerful management tool in tackling the uncertainties and competition in the shipping industry.

Dr Rawindaran V Nair graduated from the University of Malaya with a degree in economics in 1970.  He holds a Masters degree in maritime studies and a Master's degree in legal aspects of marine affairs from the University of Wales.  He obtained his doctorate from the same University with major in competition law and economics in the liner shipping industry.  He is currently teaching International Trade and Transportation Law, Shipping Economics and International Shipping Policy (maritime safety and security module) under the MSc Marine Policy/International Transport Programme in the Logistics and Operations Management Section of Cardiff University.  He has conducted research in various topics related to the maritime industry including a study of the UK economy's requirements for people with experience of working at sea.  He has presented papers at international conferences including meetings of the International Association of Maritime Economists.  He has recently concluded a study on trade documentation for imports, exports and transhipment in the United Kingdom.  He has published in academic journals on topics relating to economic regulation of liner shipping, and international transport documetns and in addition he has written for trade journals.  His recent book published in 2009 entitled: 'Economic Regulation and Structural Change: Liner Shipping Industry' is used as a reference text in the university.  He was also a writer for the chapter on Logistics within the Industrial Master Plan for Malaysia for the period 2006-2020.  He is currently carrying out research on transport and logistics and his research interests include international trade and transport law, maritime safety, security and liner shipping economics.

Prof. Leszek Buzynski is Professor of International Relations at International University of Japan in Niigata Japan.  He teaches International Politics and Security, International Conflict Resolution, Asia Pacific International Relations and ASEAN governance and development.  He has authored many books, journal articles, monographs and chapters in books on those subjects.  He was Dean of the Graduate School of International Relations, International University of Japan, from September 1997 until September 2001 and concurrently Director of the IUJ Research Institute and also Director of the Research Institute of Asian Development from 1995 to 1997.  He was Senior Research Fellow and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Strategic Studies at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre [SDSC] at the Australian National University [ANU], Canberra, Australia from 187 to 1993.  He used to lecture at the Department of Political Science at the National University of Singapore [NUS] from 1980 until 1987. Prof. Busyzinski obtained a Ph.D. (International Relations) from London School of Economics and Political Science and a Master of Science (International Relations), London School of Economics and Political Science in 1980 and 1975 respectively.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from Australian National University in 1972.
