Dr. Mark J. Valencia is an internationally known maritime policy analyst, political commentator and consultant focused on Asia. He was a Senior Fellow with the East-West Center for 26 years where he originated, developed and managed international, interdisciplinary projects on maritime policy and international relations in Asia. He has a M.A. in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island and a Ph.D in Oceanography from the University of Hawaii. Before joining the East-West Center, Dr. Valencia was a Lecturer at the Universiti Sains Malaysia and a Technical Expert with the UNDP Regional Project on Offshore Prospecting based in Bangkok.

Dr Forbes is an Adjunct Professor and the Map Curator (since 1975) at the University of Western Australia. He was an Adjunct Associate Professor (1997-2006) at the Department of Spatial Sciences, Curtin University and is presently a Visiting Research Fellow at the Maritime Institute of Malaysia.
He is a professional cartographer, lecturer, supervisor to Graduate and Under-graduate students at UWA and Curtin University. He has developed a close honourary research/working relationship with MIMA since its inception in 1994, through the offering of technical advice and attendances at Conferences, Seminars, publication of Occasional Papers, compiling and publishing two atlases: Atlas of Malaysia's Maritime Space (1998) and Malaysia's Maritime Realm (2008), articles for MIMA Bulletin and facilitating Workshops on the cartographic aspects and geographical concepts of maritime boundary delimitation and archival research on terrestrial and maritime boundary issues.

Prof. Leszek Buszynki

Prof. Leszek Buzynski is Professor of International Relations at International University of Japan in Niigata Japan. He teaches International Politics and Security, International Conflict Resolution, Asia Pacific International Relations and ASEAN governance and development. He has authored many books, journal articles, monographs and chapters in books on those subjects. He was Dean of the Graduate School of International Relations, International University of Japan, from September 1997 until September 2001 and concurrently Director of the IUJ Research Institute and also Director of the Research Institute of Asian Development from 1995 to 1997. He was Senior Research Fellow and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Strategic Studies at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre [SDSC] at the Australian National University [ANU], Canberra, Australia from 187 to 1993. He used to lecture at the Department of Political Science at the National University of Singapore [NUS] from 1980 until 1987. Prof. Busyzinski obtained a Ph.D. (International Relations) from London School of Economics and Political Science and a Master of Science (International Relations), London School of Economics and Political Science in 1980 and 1975 respectively. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from Australian National University in 1972.
