The International Training Course on Strategic Management of the Maritime Sector for Officials from CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam) Countries successfully concluded on 30 July 2010.  The two-week course was held at MIMA and facilitated by MIMA senior researchers and renowned experts in various maritime areas.

The course featured lectures, field visits, and group discussions and presentations

This course was held as part of the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) through which Malaysia shares its development experience and expertise with other developing countries.  This is done in line with the spirit of promoting South-South Cooperation, in particular technical cooperation among developing countries.  MTCP has emerged as a key tool of Malaysia's foreign policy especially in engaging fellow developing nations through capacity building.

Workshop on ASEAN Network Port Performance and Capacity

Over 50 delegates from maritime agencies, private sector and the academia representing several ASEAN countries, Republic of Korea and Japan attended a two-day workshop on ASEAN Network Ports Performance and Capacity at Le Meridien Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.  The workshop was co-organised by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime affairs (MLTM) of the Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Transport (MOT) Malaysia.  MIMA was represented by Nazery Khalid, Senior Fellow who co-chaired and facilitated group discussions at the workshop.

The objectives of the workshop were :

  • to identify the current performance and capacity of ports included in the ASEAN Network Ports which entails major container ports in South East Asia, focusing on the utilization of technologies and their sustainability, and developing a network among ASEAN ports;
  • to discuss the collection and compilation of major parameters of the port industry in South East Asia; and
  • to set up a network of 47 ASEAN ports for the benefit of ASEAN member countries.

Marine Leisure Industry Stakeholders’ Meeting

A stakeholders' meeting to discuss the problems, issues and challenges faced by the Malaysian marine leisure industry was held at the E&O Hotel in Penang on 26 July 2010.  Hosted by Association of Marine Industries Malaysia (AMIM), the meeting was attended by marina operators, industry players in the boating industry, and officials from state and Federal agencies.

Following the 1st National Marine Industries Forum which MIMA co-organised with Malaysian Industry-Government High Technology (MIGHT) and in May 2010, a working group consisting of players in the marine leisure industry in Malaysia was set up to look into issues in the industry and coming up with recommendations to promote its growth and development.  MIMA has been involved in the working group and has hosted several of its meetings.
