"Towards a Clean and Green Industry"

The need to address the issue of climate change has become a matter of priority, and players in the maritime sector must stand up and be counted to play their part to reduce carbon emissions.

This point rang loud and clear throughout MIMA's Seminar on Greening the Maritime Sector : Towards a Clean and Green Industry organized by the Centre for Maritime Economics and Industries at MIMA Conference Room on 26 May 2010.

The seminar was attended by 45 participants representing a wide range of companies involved in the maritime sector plus those from the academia, regulatory agencies and industries.  The large turnout and wide representation of the audience reflect the strong public interest and rising concern on the issue.

Visit to Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM)

A MIMA delegation led by Director General, Dr. Pola Singh visited Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) or Malaysian Maritime Academy, the country's premier maritime education and training institution on 19 May 2010.  The objective of the meeting was to strengthen the cordial ties which have existed between MIMA and ALAM and to learn about the academy's roles in developing human capital in the shipping sector and the programs it offers.

Established in 1977, ALAM has grown from strength to strength and enjoys a reputation for offering high-quality Cadet training programs and excellent courses for the shipping industry.  As a measure of the quality of its curriculum, ALAM has been accredited with the accredited with the DNV SeaSkill Certification for the Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering courses, and has developed strategic alliances with reputable international maritime institutions and organisations.  Such international recognition provides testimony to the academy's tireless efforts to provide a disciplined and regimented professional education system.  Such a system encourages ALAM students to learn, lead, strategise and adapt in equipping them with optimal competency and preparing them for a reputable career in the maritime industry.

Talk on Maritime Security in the Gulf of Aden and off Somalia: a French Perspective

Vice Admiral Bruno Nielly French Forces Joint Commander in the Indian Ocean (ALINDIEN) gave a lecture on Maritime Security in the Gulf of Aden and off Somalia: a French Perspective at MIMA on 18 May 2010. The talk was intended to provide France's perspective on piracy and ship hijacking in the Gulf of Aden and off Somalia and to share its experience and contribution in combating what has become a scourge to the international shipping community.

During the talk Vice Admiral Nielly highlighted the modus operandi of the Somali pirates, the seasonal nature of the attacks and the equipment used. He also shared with the participants the legal framework for international action against the pirates as well as the strategic, operational and tactical lessons from the French Navy's experience in combating piracy in the Gulf of Aden and off Somalia.
