MIMA is organizing the above Training Course which will be held at our premise on 19-30 July 2010.  This course is held as part of the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) through which Malaysia shares its development experience and expertise with other developing countries.  This is done in line with the spirit of promoting South-South Cooperation, in particular technical cooperation among developing countries.

The course aims to provide government officials from CLMV countries with an understanding on the basic concepts, theories and knowledge about the maritime sector, with an emphasis on the management and administration of the ports and shipping sector and inland waterways.  The course will cover the economic principles and operational practicalities involved in maritime trade, port operations, shipping sector and maritime ancillary services.  Topics covered include an overview of shipping and ports sectors, the shipping market, international trade, maritime law, port competitiveness, economic organisation and principles of trade and shipping industry, port development and administration, and management of shipping traffic.

The course, consisting mainly of lectures and field visits, will be organised in the ASEAN region.  Visits to shipping companies, port terminals and related government agencies and institutions will be organized.  In addition, participants will prepare Country Papers on the maritime sector of their respective countries and present them at the end of the course.

Towards Meeting Malaysia’s Human Capital Needs in the Maritime Industry

E-mail Print PDF

Malaysia's dependence on the maritime industry to power its growing international trade and facilitate activities such as offshore oil and gas exploration and production needs to be complemented by the development of human capital to enable these activities.

Although existing training institutes have successfully produced skilled and well-trained seafarers and other personnel in the maritime sector, more efforts need to be undertaken to ensure adequate supply of local manpower to work in the maritime industry.

To this end, the plan to set up a maritime training institute called the Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT) in Educity in Iskandar Malaysia, a development region in the southern Peninsular Malaysian state of Johor, is a laudable step in the right direction to produce competent home-grown personnel in the industry and elevate Malaysia's stature as a maritime nation.  Educity is a comprehensive 21.4-hectare township in Nusajaya within Iskandar Malaysia that will feature the campuses of world class higher learning institutions and will be positioned as an education and a knowledge hub.
