Celebrating the Oceans

World Oceans Day, 8 June
“Our Oceans, Our Future”

OceansDay17

Home to a great diversity of marine life, the world’s oceans have a profound impact on each and every one of us. Their precious coastal and marine ecosystems provide food, services, livelihoods, energy, trade and transportation, and revenue from tourism, all of which are integral to our survival.

Growing populations as well as uses and users of the seas and oceans pose significant threats to the global environment, resources, and ecosystems. Oceans and coasts are also increasingly vulnerable to the effects of pollution as well as changing climate which affects shoreline communities from the risks posed by rising sea levels, coastal storms, and the erosion and flooding. It is therefore critical that proactive and effective measures are taken to safeguard our blue planet and defend our maritime heritage.

World Oceans Day (WOD) is celebrated on the 8th of June annually as one of the means to address and create awareness of the above issues, and has been adopted as a flagship programme by MIMA’s Centre for Coastal and Marine Environment since 2010. The activities organised for WOD have been conducted in close collaboration with stakeholders, scientists, businesses, NGOs, and local and international partners and include workshops, conferences, exhibitions, career talks, coastal clean-ups, awareness talks, and others. MIMA will continue to engage stakeholders in celebrating the oceans for sustainability.

Several activities have been planned for the next several weeks, aimed at promoting awareness and knowledge of the ecosystems and ecological integrity of our coasts and marine areas and assist the country in addressing related environmental management and resources protection challenges.
